Divine Liturgy in English

As some of our parishioners requested, and with the blessing of Metropolitan Alexander of Pereyaslav and Vyshneve, next Saturday, February 6, at 10:00 am, the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom will be celebrated in English in our Cathedral. The first liturgy of this day, as usual, will be held in Ukrainian at 9:00.

Please let your non-Ukrainian friends know!

The liturgy of the Orthodox Church is a source of theology and a spiritual treasure that should be available to Christians. For this purpose, our worship must be performed in a language understood by people. The apostle Paul insisted on this when he wrote: “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays but my mind is unproductive… In church I would rather speak five words with my mind, in order to instruct others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue” (1Kor. 14:14, 19). Ten years ago, immediately after His Beatitude Metropolitan Volodymyr consecrated our Cathedral, we began to celebrate the liturgy in Ukrainian every Saturday (while other services were conducted in Church Slavonic). Now we want to invite brothers and sisters who come to Kyiv from other countries of the world to join the Divine Liturgy of the Orthodox Church, which will be conducted in a language they understand.

By the way, if necessary, the sacraments of Baptism and Marriage might be performed in English in our Cathedral. Our clergy may also hear confessions in English.

We hope that this good deed will become our tradition, and we will celebrate the liturgy in English regularly, at least once a month. Wait for messages on our site!
